2013 primeurs : a beautiful vintage for white Pessac-Léognan wines

Primeurs blancs 3

The presentation of barrel samples of the new vintage for Pessac-Léognan wines took place in early April at Château Malartic-Lagravière. Vignobles André Lurton were obviously represented at this important event. Promotion is especially important this year  because of the difficult economic climate and the fact that the 2013 vintage was a challenging one in Bordeaux due to uncooperative weather.

Wine professionals from around the world nevertheless came to this major event:  merchants, journalists, brokers, and other specialists were there to evaluate a vintage that was sometimes criticised even before it was tasted...

Fortunately, feedback was largely positive for the Pessac-Léognan appellation, and 2013 has some very pleasurable wines in store for us!

The consensus was that 2013 was a great success for the appellation's white wines.  2013 Château La Louvière was widely deemed to be one of the finest, and several professionals cited it as very pure, with good body.

The white Château Couhins-Lurton, a great growth, was much appreciated as well. This 2013 is elegant and refined with hints of honey and lime blossom (the French journalists Bettane & Desseauve gave it a score of 16/20, and James Suckling in America rated it 92/93)

 A) A few tasting notes and opinions of 2013 white Château La Louvière  (en primeurs)

James Suckling : 07.04.2014 - Note : from 92.00 to 93.00 / 100
A dense white at the top of the charts in 2013 with sliced apple, pear and lemon peel. Full body, bright acidity and a flavorful finish. Structured white Bordeaux.

Roger Voss for The Wine Enthusiast: 03.04.2014 - Note : 92.00 / 100
Barrel Sample. Tight and currently herbaceous, this is a crisp, fruity wine that hints at the richness to come. It is full and concentrated in the mouth, with a mineral texture.

Bettane and Desseauve : 15.04.2014 - Note : 16,50 / 20
Charming nose reminiscent of lime blossom. Very elegant, pure, and crisp. Shows precision winemaking in the château's time-honoured style.

Jeannie Cho Lee for the Asian Palate: 16.04.2014
Focused white with wonderful purity and lifted passionfruit and gooseberry flavours. The wine has a fine texture with fairly long length.

Panos Kakaviatos : 09.04.2014 - Note : from 88,00 to 90,00 / 100

Steven Spurrier for Decanter : 14.04.2014 - Note : 16.50 / 100
Fine lemony, dry honey fruit and a very good expression of Sauvignon that will show complexity. Drink: 2015-2018.

James Molesworth from The Wine Spectator : 02.04.2014 - Note : from 90.00 to 93.00 / 100
Plump, with a mix of star fruit, white peach and chamomile flavors backed by a tangy chamomile note on the rapier finish. Mouthwatering.

B) A few tasting notes and opinions of 2013 white Château Couhins-Lurton (en primeurs)

Tim Atkin : 01.05.2014 - 93,00/100
André Lurton and consultant Denis Dubourdieu have lifted the bar in 2013, making a white, Sauvignon-based blend of real finesse and balance, with tangy, struck match aromas, good depth and texture and a herbal, salty finish. Mouth-watering stuff. 2014-20

Gault & Millau : 02.06.2014 - Note : 17/20
Wonderfully crisp, displaying a host of citrus aromas with underlying sage and aniseed nuances. Bracing like a see breeze. The wine’s juicy pear side contributes soft attractive flavours.

Jeannie Cho Lee for The Asian Palate : 16.04.2014
Attractive gooseberry and mangosteen flavours on this wine that is light, elegant with nice mid palate texture and body. Well made, refreshing white that is a good example of how well the whites performed in this difficult vintage.

Panos Kakaviatos : 09.04.2014 - Note : from 90,00 to 92,00 / 100

James Suckling : 07.04.2014 - Note : de 92,00 à 93,00 / 100
A dense, crisp white with sliced white peaches and grapefruit. Full body, tangy acidity and a beautiful finish.

Steven Spurrier for Decanter : 14.04.2014 - 90,00 / 100
Very good expression of 100% Sauvignon Blanc with clarity and persistence. Drink: 2015-2018.
