2013 vintage at Châteaux de Rochemorin and de Cruzeau : retrospective and first impressions...

2013 serves as a reminder to wine professionals such as ourselves that great wine cannot be made without cooperation from Mother Nature. Indeed, our winemaking team had to expend a great deal of energy in the vineyard and cellars to cope with the capricious weather. (see weather records for Pessac-Léognan / weather station of Château La Louvière)

We made sure to treat the round, generous Cabernet wines and the beautiful Sauvignon Blanc wines with tender loving care...

Vendanges 2013 Rochemorin

The harvest at Châteaux de Rochemorin and  de Cruzeau  began with Sauvignon Blanc on 17th September – much later than in recent years.

Our winemaking team proved to be very quick and responsive to make up for the variable weather in September. This was a key factor in obtaining quality juice.

In light of the vintage characteristics, our oenologists decided to apply skin contact (of varying duration) for the Sauvignons Blanc grapes, at Château de Rochemorin . The fact that these were in good condition and showed vibrant acidity led us to make this choice in order to highlight the rich aromatics contained in the skins.

The first tastings at Château de Cruzeau show the wine to be more vivacious than in recent vintages, with citrus and white fruit aromas.

As for the red wines, the Merlot crop was lower than usual due to the cool spring. This was the first red wine variety to be picked, starting on 26th September (and the 28th at de Cruzeau), followed shortly thereafter by Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in prime condition. Now that alcoholic fermentation is finished, our initial tastings show the red wines, both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, to be of very good quality.  Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, was ripe across the board and the wines are proving to be delicious: fruity and round. They will undoubtedly constitute the structure and backbone of 2013 Château de Cruzeau.

Our natural optimism was somewhat tested this year, but taking a look at the results, it was fully justified!
