In Bordeaux, it is traditional to organise a celebratory dinner as a fitting end to the harvest. The Crus Classés de Graves observe this custom with their annual Accabailles dinner, held on one of the winegrowing estates. It was the turn of Château Couhins-Lurton, Cru Classé de Graves, to host the 24th edition of this prestigious event, which brings together eminent representatives of the world of French and international gastronomy.
On 16 November 2014, Éric Perrin, President of the Union des Crus Classés de Graves , together with André Lurton, Pascal Le Faucheur, General Manager of Vignobles André Lurton, and Christine Lurton de Caix, ambassador for our Pessac-Léognan great growth estates (Château Couhins-Lurton and Château La Louvière) welcomed 170 chefs and key figures from the restaurant world to share an unforgettable experience!
The festivities started with an extensive tasting, where the 16 Crus Classés de Graves (including Château Haut-Brion, 1st Great Growth in the 1855 classification) presented their white and red wines from the 2012 vintage.
Only a great chef was capable of orchestrating a dinner to meet the expectations and delight the discerning palates of these guests: Philippe Etchebest, a 2-star chef and Meilleur Ouvrier de France. He designed a remarkable menu for the occasion, focusing on a particularly seasonal theme: mushrooms. Among the dishes served that evening, the guests particularly appreciated "flash-grilled cod and seasonal mushrooms fried with garlic and parsley, accompanied by truffle foam and celery/truffle sauce", paired with great white wines from the Crus Classés de Graves. These subtle flavours were followed by the equally delectable "Roast fillet of wood pigeon with a croquette of leg meat, salsify, butternut squash, and cep mushroom cap in garlic butter...", accompanied by the best red wines from these great growth estates.
A tombola organised during the dinner gave the luckiest guests an opportunity to win double magnums of Graves great growths! This interlude was much appreciated!
The dessert was a wonderful surprise for André Lurton, owner of the estate and founder of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The Union des Crus Classés de Graves had a magnificent cake prepared for him by Bernard Monblanc to celebrate his 90th birthday. André Lurton was particularly touched by this thoughtful gesture.
This wonderfully elegant, convivial evening was a truly epicurean celebration of fine cuisine and the best Graves wines!
