The Graves Supérieures appellation

Graves Supérieures are semi-sweet white wines produced within the Graves appellation, the historic cradle of Bordeaux wine. The Graves stretches from the city of Bordeaux south as far as Langon on the left bank of the Garonne. Presently, 234 hectares of vines produce approximately 11,000 hectolitres of wines a year..

The following communes make wine entitled to the Graves Supérieures appellation : Arbanats, Ayguemortes-les-Graves, Beautiran, Bègles, La Brède, Budos, Cabanac-Villagrains, Cadaujac, Canéjan, Castres-Gironde, Cérons, Cestas, Eysines, Gradignan, Guillos, Le Haillan, Illats, Isle-Saint-Georges, Landiras, Langon, Léogeats, Léognan, Martignas-sur-Jalle, Martillac, Mazères, Mérignac, Pessac, Podensac, Portets, Pujols-sur-Ciron, Roaillan, Saint-Jean-d'Illac, Saint-Médard-d'Eyrans, Saint-Michel-de-Rieufret, Saint-Morillon, Saint-Pardon-de-Conques, Saint-Pierre-de-Mons, Saint-Selve, Saucats, Talence, Toulenne, Villenave-d'Ornon et Virelade.

The terroir is eminently suited to winegrowing. The temperate climate is influenced by ocean breezes and the unique soil consists of gravelly and sandy rises with scattered veins of clay and some limestone outcrops.

This appellation was created by an official decree dated 4 March 1937.

Specifications for the A.O.C Graves Supérieures :

  • The wines must be made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes (as well as Muscadelle to a much lesser extent) ;
  • Sugar: minimum 195 g/litre in the must ;
  • Minimum alcoholic degree: 12.5°;
  • Yields: 40-48 hl/ha, depending on the vintage.

Characteristics of white wines from the Graves Supérieures appellation

These semi-sweet white wines have a beautiful golden colour and a bouquet of citrus zest, citrus, nectarines and white peaches. They have a very long aftertaste and display a fine balance between sugar and acidity; as well as considerable freshness on the finish. They can age for 2 to 5 years and are particularly pleasant with grilled fish, fish curry, foie gras, or fresh fruit salad...
