A terroir especially conducive to winegrowing

This entire region is naturally predisposed to making fine wine: beautiful gravelly rises deposited by the Garonne River thousands of years ago as well as an oceanic climate with mild winters and relatively dry summers. The light gravel soil is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon whereas the deeper clay soil is perfect for Merlot.

The Haut-Médoc appellation was created by an official decree dated 14 November 1936. It applies exclusively to red wines. The vineyards cover over 4,600 hectares and produce approximately 230,000 hectolitres of wine a year

Rules and regulations  igoverning production include:

  • Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot (main varieties), as well as Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Carménère and Petit Verdot (proportions vary from one estate to another).
  • Vine density: from 6,500 to 10,000 vines per hectare.
  • Minimum sugar content: 162 g/l in the must.
  • Alcoholic degree: 10-12.5.
  • Yields: 48-66 hl/ha (depending on the vintage)

Characteristics of the Haut-Médoc appellation

Displaying a beautiful red colour, these wines are subtle and elegant. The bouquet has hints of blackberry, redcurrant, liquorice, spice and mint. The wines are vivacious, generous and powerful on the palate and also have excellent ageing potential: from 5-30 years (in great vintages). They go especially well with grilled meats as well as quail with grapes or duck fillet...
