Mathilde de Caix-Lurton

Group Deputy Managing Director

Even though she is André Lurton’s granddaughter and Christine Lurton’s daughter, Mathilde was not brought up on a vineyard. Château Bonnet was just a holiday destination in her youth, somewhere she stayed when visiting her maternal grandparents. It was when the family moved to Bordeaux, for her final year of high school, that the world of wine began to open up to her. She went on to study at the EDC Paris Business School and took advantage of her work experience to confirm her interest in the world of wine and travel:

First in 2002, at Joseph Phelps Vineyards in St Helena, California, in the wine tourism sector.  There she discovered a culture, that of the great wines of Napa Valley, the quality - and prices - that prestigious brands such as Insignia, or Opus One from Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, could achieve; combined with a policy of welcoming the general public, with the cellars open to all.

The experienced continued in London with Roberson Wine, a prestigious and highly-original independent wine merchant on Kensington High Street. She was to return to the English market a few years later.

Finally, it was an end-of-studies internship in South America that confirmed her decision to focus on the world of wine. Her uncle François Lurton advised her to “do a vintage”, so she set off to make wine at two of his estates, Bodega Piedra Negra in Argentina and Hacienda Araucano in Chile.

Job and know-how

In 2007, after this first experience in South America (a continent that remains close to her heart), Mathilde started her career by joining Domaines François Lurton. While managing exports, she passed the D.U.A.D. (Diploma in Tasting Aptitude) at ISVV Bordeaux in 2010. This diploma allowed her to structure her technical view of wine. Then in 2014, having acquired a solid commercial foundation through her international experience, she completed her training with a specialised Master’s (wine estate management) at Bordeaux Sciences Agro. This gave her the opportunity to discover the world of Bordeaux Grands Crus Classés.

From 2016, she assisted Domaines François Lurton in its latest Spanish adventure, with the creation of a new Bodega in the D.O. Rueda in the Castile and León region. She developed a passion for these terroirs and became Managing Director of Bodegas Campo Elíseo and Hermanos Lurton, renowned for their fine wines in Rueda and Toro.

Finally, with her wealth of international experience in wine and business, Mathilde joined the family business of Vignobles André Lurton in 2021, as Deputy Managing Director working alongside her uncle and group chairman, Jacques Lurton.

Mathilde sums up her attitude to wine in the words of writer Francis Ponge: “Like all things, wine has a secret; but it’s a secret that it doesn’t keep. You can make it confide in you: you just have to love it, drink it, let it into your heart. Then it speaks. Taking you into its confidence, it speaks.”
