Laurent Bouthonnier

Cellarmaster of Château de Rochemorin

Laurent Bouthonnier was born in Périgueux in 1971. Although his grandparents and parents, farmers in the Dordogne region, were close to the earth, nothing predestined him to be become interested in the world of wine.  In fact, it was simply watching a television programme about great wines as a teenager that motivated him to find a job in this field, which he did after studies in Bordeaux to obtain his advanced viticulture and winemaking certficate (taking sandwich courses).

Job and know-how

Laurent Bouthonnier took these courses while working part-time for Vignobles André Lurton in 1995, when he started to learn the subtleties of how to be a cellarmaster from Jean-Marc Comte at Château de Cruzeau, whom he helped to make several vintages (1996 to 2000). From 1998 to 2004 he was also put in charge of bottling for all the André Lurton châteaux in Pessac-Léognan.

In  2001, he was appointed cellarmaster at Château Couhins-Lurton. He was thus very much involved with the return to red wine production in 2002,  a year in which a new, much more modern and functional cellar was inaugurated.

In 2004, he came to work at Château Rochemorin in magnificent ultra-modern cellars where a wealth of technological  innovations work towards reflecting the full potential of this great Graves terroir.  However, Laurent likes to point out that at Rochemorin, perhaps more than elsewhere, teamwork is what really matters.  There must be an excellent synergy between people to produce something truly special...
