Portrait Jean-François Gouin

Off-trade Sales Director (France)

Originally from Paris, Jean-François Gouin is a graduate of the École des Vins et Spiritueux de Paris (a school established by the wine trade and since disappeared) where he obtained a Drinks Industry and Sales diploma. After several placements, including one with a cellarmaster, his career dates from 1976. He started out on the technical side, working in an oenology laboratory. Before long, he became manager of a production facility supplying wines to a large supermarket chain. From 1982 to 1986, he set up the first wine bottling facility for another large supermarket group in Niort.

In 1990, Jean-François's career took another direction when he turned to selling wine. The experience he acquired with supermarkets groups proved to be precious.  He arrived in Bordeaux in 1998 to take a job as sales director with two large Bordeaux négociants.

Job and know-how

Jean-François Gouin became part of the Vignobles André Lurton team in June 2009, during Vinexpo. He was given a special mission to develop the supermarket sector. In light of his technical and commercial background and his experience with supermarkets, he is guided by the principle that "you can only sell something really well if you know it really well".

He enjoys sharing his knowledge and love of wine, especially with buyers for supermarket chains. He has seen their expectations develop over the years, mirroring changes in consumer tastes. Jean-François is well-aware that the market has gone from one of "basic needs" to one more concerned with "pleasure" – and that nothing counts more than the quality of the wine in the bottle.
