Vineyard Manager at Château Bonnet

Given the fact that he was born, in 1969, into a family of winegrowers from the Entre-Deux-Mers region, it was almost impossible for Stéphane Barthe to escape his destiny. He followed in his father’s footsteps as a wine estate owner, not far from Château Bonnet. Once he had obtained his advanced vocational diploma in viticulture and oenology, he began his adventure in the world of wine.

Job and know-how

He started at a local level, learning about the fermentation and ageing process in the Medoc, followed by working in the vineyards of Saint-Émilion, before becoming a cellarmaster in Entre-Deux-Mers.

Wishing to discover new horizons while remaining connected to the wine industry, Stéphane worked abroad for a few years. In 1993, he left for Zimbabwe to work for Cairn Wineries on the Mukuyu (Marondera) estate. After that, he embarked on a new adventure in China, where he managed a vineyard in the Xinjiang region, and monitored the winemaking process in conjunction with the company Derenoncourt Consultants.

Having acquired a great deal of experience, Stéphane took over the 60-hectare family wine estate.

In 2017, he joined Vignobles André Lurton as operations manager at Château de Barbe Blanche in Lussac.

Stéphane strongly believes that winegrowers’ and winemakers’ activities should be pursued hand in hand with nature, with utmost respect for the environment. For him, a great wine is 60% harmony between the vineyard and its terroir, 30% the weather during the growing season, and 10% human expertise.
