Château Couhins-Lurton Red

Château Couhins-Lurton is the emblematic estate of the André Lurton family. With a sublime terroir of gravel and clay, the red wines are made from fruity and smooth Merlot grapes of great elegance and a sophisticated smokiness.

2019 was marked by a fairly mild winter, resulting in early bud break. Spring rainfall was scarce and drought conditions set in in early summer. Rainfall in August provided a welcome relief for winegrowers.

Tasting Comment


Brilliant colour. Intense, deep red colour, almost black, with some violet reflections.


Nose is complex with notes of black fruits, very ripe, slightly jammy (blackberry, quetsche), with a hint of toast.


Attack is fruity and juicy. Well-structured and beautifully balanced, with an emphasis on elegance and silky, well-integrated tannins. Persistent fruity finish. Very good length. Its finesse can be appreciated with a braised fillet of beef, a roast veal Orloff or a cheese plate (St Nectaire, old Gouda, Roquefort...)

An exceptionally successful Couhins-Lurton, with Jacques Lurton at the helm for the first time with this vintage. He is slowly but surely sculpting and building on what was already the standout wine in the Lurton range, as is evident from the success in the bottle here (Jacques arrived at the end of the growing season). Give it a little time in the glass to show the flesh and creaminess that sits within the fine tannic structure, as the raspberry fruits soften and widen. Pulses of electricity, great balance and succulence. 50% new oak.

This is a gorgeous red with plenty of blackcurrants and red berries, as well as crushed-stone and chalk character. It’s full and reserved with firm and round tannins that give tension and energy to the wine. One of the best young wines I have had from here. Try after 2025.

Inviting and refreshing notes of red berries. Juicy and fresh on the palate, the wine has good energy and tight energy and tight but integrated tannins.
