Château Grossombre de Saint-Joseph Red

This remarkable wine immediately attracts one's attention because of its deep reddish-black colour. The bouquet strikes a fine balance between vanilla nuances, smoky aromas and ripe fruit (mainly blackcurrant) overtones. Château Grossombre starts out quite smooth and is altogether generous and well-structured on the palate. Spicy, oaky notes prolong the pleasure of this rich wine that deserves to age.

label Château Grossombre de Saint-Joseph red 2009
Appellation : Bordeaux supérieur

Wine style

Rich and Powerful

Grape blend

Cabernet Sauvignon 50% / Merlot 50%.

Weather

While January and February were colder than average, 2009 was nevertheless a warm year (one of the warmest in a century). There was a great deal of sunshine and a remarkable drought during the summer months.

Tasting Comment

Appareance

Clear, rimmed with entrancing violet highlights.

Nose

Tarry notes of vanilla, sweet tobacco and cinnamon from the barrel aging are instantly apparent, but do not mask the essential fruit character of black cherry and cassis, powerful proof of perfectly ripe grapes at harvest.

Mouth

The same balance of oak and fruit is echoed on the palate, opulent and smooth underpinned by muscular tannins. Elegant and powerful, needs a year or so to get into its stride.  Mouthwatering clove notes on the finish make it the perfect foil for red meats, game and classic French cuisine.

Tasters liked the rich nose bursting with fruit, with attractive mineral and spicy notes, while the palate is opulent, tasty, fruity, with rich tannins and good persistence. Balance, elegance and aging potential are all there. A fine wine.
