Château de Barbe Blanche Red

Acquired for an half in 2000 by André Lurton, this estate is ideally situated on a ridge of clay and limestone in Lussac, facing the best slopes of St Emilion. Merlot is king, and regularly gives soft and tasty wines.

label of 2014 red Château de Barbe Blanche

Wine style

Rich and Powerful

Grape blend

Merlot 85% / Cabernet franc 15%

Winter and spring were very mild, but the summer of 2014 did not live up to our expectations: it rained heavily in July, and August was much cooler than usual. However, starting in September, a miraculous Indian summer with high temperatures, was very favourable to ripening.

Tasting Comment

Deep, crimson colour with purplish highlights.

The bouquet is complex. Ripe black-berry and candied fruit aromas are harmoniously blended with soft vanilla hints from the oak.

The Merlot gives a soft initial impression on the palate. The mouthfeel is round, dense, and generous. The Cabernet Franc adds a new dimension on the mid-palate and the aftertaste is attractively fresh. This vintage shows good concentration with very elegant tannins and will be very enjoyable with grilled lamb, meat pies, or venison stew.

Ratings and reviews

Vinous :

The 2014 Barbe Blanche is a racy, succulent wine with plenty of near- and medium-term appeal. Ripe dark cherry and sweet French oak notes give the wine its overt, luscious personality. This is a very pretty wine from Andre Lurton. (Antonio Galloni)

Le Figaro :

En Primeur 2014 - A well-structured, fresh, and fairly austere wine. 3-8 years.

Vino :

En Primeur 2014 - Category: Very good.

88.00 / 100

Fresh blackcurrant and chanterelle mushrooms on the nose. Balanced and with a silky finish on the palate (a benchmark visit of the château). (Antoon Laurent)

Consumption period
