Château de Rochemorin Red

Château de Rochemorin belonged to the great philosopher and writer Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, in the 18th century. Among other famous works, he was the author of the "Persian Letters". Montesquieu was a fine ambassador for the red wines of Rochemorin among his friends, acquaintances and the notables he met during his trips throughout Europe, never forgetting to praise the beautiful complexity and mineral characteristics of his wine, so typical of the Graves terroir. Its beautiful aromatic expression, accompanied by a well-balanced and elegant palate make this one of the most reliable wines in the appellation, while remaining very affordable.

Weather

Spring was very trying, with considerable rainfall leading to fungal diseases of all sorts. This called for very close attention in the vines until the 14th of July, when the weather changed durably for the better.

Tasting Comment

Appearance

Brilliant deep garnet-red colour with copper highlights.

Nose

The complex bouquet features elegant, understated aromas of red fruit (raspberry, cherry), plum, and oak.

Mouth

The wine starts off quite smooth and fruity on the palate with hints of spice, tobacco, and even some tar on the aftertaste. This wine has a beautiful tannic structure and richness typical of the great wines of Pessac-Léognan. The well-integrated oak adds extra body and structure to this wine that can be enjoyed as of now, even though it can also wait a few years, at which point it will be delightful with roast duck or meat in a sauce.

From the André Lurton portfolio of châteaux, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is a somewhat compact, narrowly built wine. The wine is a medium dark ruby color, with unsmoked cigar tobacco and black cherries on the attack that narrow out quickly in the mouth. It is spicy, earthy and best drunk over the next 7-8 years. Drink : 2015-2023.

2015/2016 Edition - Pure, rich fruit on the nose, with delicate hints of peony. Similar flavours on the palate with a soft tannic texture. Very attractive, charming, and balanced.

Weinverstand - A discreet bouquet of raspberry and caramel. A smooth wine, showing light-to-medium extraction, going on to reveal a granular texture. Subdued fruit with a touch of almond on the finish. All in all, this wine is charming and will be enjoyable young. (Ulrich Sautter)
