Château de Rochemorin belonged to the great philosopher and writer Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, in the 18th century. Among other famous works, he was the author of the "Persian Letters". Montesquieu was a fine ambassador for the red wines of Rochemorin among his friends, acquaintances and the notables he met during his trips throughout Europe, never forgetting to praise the beautiful complexity and mineral characteristics of his wine, so typical of the Graves terroir. Its beautiful aromatic expression, accompanied by a well-balanced and elegant palate make this one of the most reliable wines in the appellation, while remaining very affordable.
Rich and Powerful
Merlot 65% / Cabernet Sauvignon 35%
2016 was one of the finest vintages in the past 20 years. Winter was exceptionally wet and mild, and it rained a great deal in spring until June. However, the weather changed radically in mid-June, turning warm and quite dry, with cool nights. Ideal conditions for growing excellent wine grapes!
Its lovely, intense colour is a particularly vivid, brilliant red.
The bouquet is intense, with slightly spicy hints and lots of fresh, red-berry fruit.
The freshness of the initial impression leads into an elegant, well-balanced structure, with red-berry fruit and soft, resolved tannin. Its oaky overtones are initially discreet, but become more intense on the lovely, long aftertaste. It makes a delicious foil for pot-roasted guinea fowl, preserved goose, or jugged hare.

From the garnet-red colour to the tight finish, all the signs indicate this 2016 is well-structured. Starts out lively on the palate, going on to reveal solid tannins enhanced by notes of black fruit (blackcurrant) and spices, reminiscent of a high-quality vintage. Best enjoyed between 2022 and 2025.
A consistently good value André Lurton property that has produced a good medium term drinker in this vintage. As ever, the fruit delivery is on the modern side of classical, with richly finessed deep plum and damson, and slightly chalky tannins. 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon planted across 56ha on gravel soils, with an average vine age of 19 years. Drinking Window 2025 – 2040. (Jane Anson)
